Lake houses and second homes should be easy to enjoy, but technology issues often show up at the worst time. A simple seasonal review can prevent frustration and make the property easier to use and support throughout the season.
Start with the basics. Confirm the internet service is active and that the router is functioning. Walk the property and test Wi-Fi coverage in the main living areas, bedrooms, dock, and any outbuildings you use. If coverage is weak, note the gaps for a future upgrade rather than troubleshooting them mid-season.
If you share the property with family or guests, confirm that your guest network is set up and that the password is current. Consider whether you want guests on your main network or on a separate guest network with limited access to connected devices.
Test each security camera to confirm it is recording and accessible remotely. Check smart locks and confirm codes or access methods are current. Verify that you can arm and disarm the alarm and view cameras from your phone. Fix any dead batteries or connectivity issues before the season starts.
Turn on each TV and streaming device to confirm it powers on and connects. Update any apps or firmware that have gone stale over the offseason. Check that audio systems, soundbars, and any outdoor speakers are working. A quick test of each prevents a frustrating first evening.
Check UPS (uninterruptible power supply) batteries on your router and any sensitive equipment. Replace smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Confirm that any whole-home surge protectors are still functional. Power events during offseason storms are common and can quietly degrade equipment.
Update your list of who to call for each system—internet provider, alarm company, camera installer, and any smart home integrators. Store this somewhere the whole family can find it. When something breaks at the lake house, you want the answer to be one step away, not a two-hour search.
